Three Activities to Help Your Mind and Body

It's important for senior citizens to stay mentally sharp and physically active. Oftentimes, when a senior decides to take action, the activities that they can safely accomplish are limited. If you don't practice preventative maintenance on your mind and body, the aging process can be difficult.

In this blog, we'll discuss three activities to not only keep you active but stimulate your mind as well.

*Consult with your doctor before performing any physical activity.

Gardening

Gardening is good for both the mind and body. It takes strategic planning and organizing. Recalling what plants get watered and remembering where you planted the seeds for certain plants will keep you mentally sharp. If you're getting bored of the same routine every day, gardening will give you something to look forward to. Watching plants, herbs, fruits and veggies grow because of the care you demonstrate is extremely rewarding.

Gardening can be quite a physical workout, but if it ever becomes too strenuous, avoid digging, weeding and potting, just do simple tasks such as raking, seed placement and watering. Also, this is a great activity so senior citizens can soak up the all-important Vitamin D.

Taking Care of a Pet

Owning a pet can be a very gratifying experience for an older adult. This fulfills the desire to be needed that is often lacking for seniors. They usually have already raised children who now have their own independent family unit. Remembering to feed an animal, take it outside or clean the litter box, and also groomming a pet is healthy, both mentally and emotionally.

If you own a dog, taking it for walks is a great way for seniors to get their much-needed walks in as well.

Cooking and Baking

Whether you're cooking a recipe from memory or following instructions from a cookbook, making meals from scratch requires focus and attention to detail. It also requires you to move around the kitchen and perform some mild lifting. Cooking is good for senior citizens because they get to reap the benefits of their efforts and hard work. Plus, if you have friends and family you can share with them as well.

Gardening and cooking can go hand in hand because you might be able to incorporate herbs and veggies you have been gardening into the dish you've prepared!
