Are You Aging The Right Way?

Aging is something that happens to every human being and there is nothing we can do to stop it. There are things we can do to slow it down and to try to keep ourselves free of disease and injury.

Being able to manage stress, eating healthy and exercising are great preventative measures for warding off disease as we age. It is also important to stay connected with loved ones and friends so that you will have a good support system as you age.

A support system and socialization are very important as you age because as time goes on you will pass through the milestones of life. Children moving away, death of loved ones or maybe even a spouse, the end of a career, declining health and eventually loss of independence. There comes a time in all of our lives when we will eventually need help.

Often, people lose independence because their level of function changes so they can’t complete tasks they independently did over their entire lives and they do nothing to implement devices and equipment that would enable them to maintain their independence and increase safety.

Most people know about grab bars to help them stay when with taking a shower or getting up and down from the toilet, or a shower chair so they can sit to wash their hair and bathe, but there are many other devices that you may not know about that can help you stay independent in your home.

A big reason for loss of independence is sustaining a fall. There are different reasons people over the age of 65 fall. One is they don’t like to use an assistive device for mobility. When balance decreases and you may have been told by a therapist or physician you need a cane, rollator or walker, it is important to get one and use it. Don’t let vanity get in the way and cause you to break a hip.

We all want to age gracefully, and we can but it is important to know your limitations and use the appropriate devices and equipment to keep you independent and safe.

Bell House Medial can help. If you are not sure what you need, give us a call and we can check out your home and provide suggestions about which devices and equipment that we can install to help you to remain as independent and safe as possible as you age gracefully in your home.
