Raised Toilet Seats and Commodes
Wed, Jul 17th, 2019
Most people don’t even think about the act of getting up and down from the toilet until it becomes difficult. Things that can make getting up and down from a toilet challenging are recent surgery or illness, decreased balance or strength and decreased mobility.
When you have trouble getting up and down from the toilet, there are devices that can be implemented to make that task much easier. For example, adding a raised toilet seat (aka elevated toilet seat) or 3 in 1 commode to your existing toilet makes the seat higher, thus easier to get up and down from.
Sometimes, a grab bar by the toilet is needed either by itself or in conjunction with a raised toilet seat. A Devon bar which is anchored to the wall next to the toilet is handy for getting up and down. A Devon bar is convenient because when not in use, it can be lifted up out of the way.
If you or a loved one has a scheduled hip / knee replacement or other type of surgery that will make getting up and down from the toilet difficult, it is a good idea to prepare for “after the surgery” ahead of time.
Have a grab bar, 3 in 1 commode, raised toilet seat or Devon bar installed prior to going in for surgery as that will be one less thing you have to think about after the surgery, while you need to rest and focus on healing.
A 3 in 1 commode can be adjusted for height but raised toilet seats come in sizes and can’t be adjusted. They usually come in sizes 2” to 6” and are either regular or elongated to fit your toilet. Be sure to specify if you have an elongated shaped toilet.
Also, it is important to have the correct size raised toilet seat so that it will be comfortable when sitting down and that it is not too high or too low.
